Esophageal cancer (esophagus or oesophagus)
Sometimes known as the gullet, is an organ which consists of a muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the stomach. This is the thing that takes food down to your stoma ch and the only way to eat. The word esophagus is derived from the Latin œsophagus, which derives from the Greek word oisophagos (οισοφάγος), lit. "Entrance for eating." It is usually about 25–30 cm long and connects the mouth to the stomach.
Esophageal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the esophagus.
The two most common forms of esophageal cancer

Risk factor
Smoking, heavy alcohol use and Barrett esophagus can increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer.
- Tobacco use.
- Heavy alcohol use.
- Barrett esophagus: A condition in which the cells lining the lower part of the esophagus have changed or been replaced with abnormal cells that could lead to cancer of the esophagus. Gastric reflux (the backing up of stomach contents into the lower section of the esophagus) may irritate the esophagus and, over time, cause Barrett esophagus.
- Older age.
- Being male.
- Tobacco chewing
- Consuming spicy food.
