Surgery
Esophagectomy is the most common treatment for cancer of the esophagus. Esophagectomy is commonly used to treat esophageal cancer that has not spread beyond the esophagus and its surrounding lymph nodes. The goal of the operation is to remove the cancer and nearby tissue that may be affected. An esophagectomy is major surgery, and should be done by surgeons who have experience performing the procedure.  Doctor will remove the cancerous part of the esophagus and will connect the remaining healthy of esophagus and stomach. Intestine will be used to make the connection. The lymph node surrounding and draining the esophagus will be removed.

Radiation
Radiation therapy is a treatment that uses high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy can be used to treat esophageal cancer in combination with chemotherapy before surgery. In borderline cases radiation therapy can be used to alleviate swallowing problems associated with esophageal cancer.

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the use of anticancer medicines to treat cancer cells, the drug used will stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. The way the chemotherapy is given depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated.
Methods of giving chemotherapy are

  • Oral Medication
  • Injections              

Both Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy should not be used before*** and cannot be alternative to operation.
